Hemel Stags Launch New Season With A New Shirt

Hemel Stags begin their 2008 Rugby League season with a home game against Huddersfield on Sunday 6th April KO 2.00pm at Pennine Way.

We spoke to Head Coach Troy Perkins “Our 2008 RLCN campaign begins soon and all the boys can’t wait for the first game against Huddersfield. Training has been going well and there has been a real buzz around the club. We achieved a great deal in our two pre season games and some of the younger players have put their hand up for first team selection. Most of last season’s squad has remained except for Michael Chan and Matt Thomas (London Skolars) as well as Nathan Ferguson and Aaron James who have both returned to Australia.
There are some new additions to the senior squad including local lads Ryan Backhouse Aaron Higgs, Karl Turner, James Keeley and Eddie M’Baraga. They have all fitted in well and are all working hard on improving their game. We have also recruited some quality Australians including Kane Phillips from Brisbane, Caine Wynyard from Sydney and John Maggan from Cairns who will all be involved over the coming weeks.
I feel that this season will be the toughest to date as the standard has been raised season after season. There are more quality players joining clubs in this league which can only be good for the competition. We have set our goals and this includes improving on last season’s sixth place.” He added “We are always on the lookout for new players so if you fancy having a try pop up to a Tuesday night training session”
Hemel Stags who have been playing Rugby League in the town since 1981 will be running two senior teams this year, one in the Co Operative Rugby League Conference National and one in the London Merit league.

Perkins adds depth to squad

Hemel Stags have added some more depth to the backline with former Moseley rugby union player Mark Coulson joining the club.
Head Coach Troy Perkins said:
"I am really pleased that Mark has agreed to play with us season. He has been involved at a professional rugby union club and has the ability to go a long way in rugby league. I have watched him play alot of rugby union this season and I feel that rugby league will suit him down to the ground. Mark is a very creative ball player and has a great kicking game which will benefit us whether he plays standoff or fullback. I am looking forward to him being involved at some point in the game against Huddersfield"
