Round 6 Hemel Stags vs Carlisle:
HEMEL STAGS 74 Carlisle 8
Hemel prepared for next week’s massive top of the table clash with Bramley with a 13-try romp over game Carlisle.
Although profligate with the ball in the first half, the greater concentration demanded by coach Troy Perkins meant a blistering second, with the Centurions almost constantly under the cosh.
Barry John Swindells’ goal kicking was another factor in the victory margin, the prolific full back kicking the first eleven conversions, to take his consecutive run to 25 successful shots at goal but – to the mirth of all – he was substituted after his first miss, from the touchline, in the 65th minute.
Two tries in as many minutes after the early softening up process among the forwards set the Stags on their way.
The first was a superb solo effort, Scott Clendenning-Fenton bewitching the opposition with a mazy run to the posts.
Carlisle spilt the ball on their next set and centre Jarrod Searson scooped it up to scamper to the corner for the first of his four tries.
Centurions enjoyed a spell of pressure but were undone when penalised on the Hemel line for failing to play the ball correctly.
Undeterred, prop Shaun Richardson broke three tackles on a thundering run and Martin Stalker positioned Ellis Little on a fine angled run for their first try.
Hemel dominated the remainder of the half; Searson powered through for his second, prop Tim Stevens barged all-comers out the way to go over and then produced another storming run to set up Ian Grime to make it 30-4 at the break.
Stags made a blistering start to the second half with three tries in barely five minutes.
Brad Glen made good metres and Andy Champ scampered over, Chris Woods broke from half way after trickery from Alex Weber and John Weber spun out of a tackle to touch down.
Clendenning-Fenton picked up a second try after Michael Crosby collected a loose Carlisle off load and, on the hour, although desperate Centurions defence held up Joseph Compton-Meyer, they were powerless to deny James Howitt from the play the ball.
Searson completed tries three and four within a couple of minutes of each other and Alex Brown collected his own grubber to complete the home tally.
Carlisle had the final say as a reward for their efforts, Steve Potter showing tremendous strength to force his way over out wide to end a clash played in a tremendous spirit.
