The Stags were confident of a successful weekend but results proved otherwise.

The Southern Conference League side travelled to Bedford Tigers confident of repeating their pre-season victory but the Tigers had other ideas. Hemel went behind in the opening minutes when Bedford crossed for an unconverted try. From then on it was a case of Hemel always tying to catch up as the Tigers preserved their one try advantage throughout the match. Hemel were handicapped when speedster Mitch Vincent went off in the first half with a rib injury - his pace in the second half against a tiring Tigers defence would have been useful.

Hemel had plenty of opportunites to win the match but a combination of some poor individual errors and lack of support when players made  the break was the difference. Liam O'Callaghan - playing out of position at scrum half - was the pick of the Hemel players.

Finally a drop goal a couple of minutes from the end gave the Tigers an unassailable 7 point lead and they were deserved 23-16 winners to cement their place in the Top Four.

Elsewhere, Hemel juniors had a good weekend. The Unders 16's Blue travelled to Colchester and easily beat Eastern Rhinos 52-6 while the UNder 14's put their recent run of narrow losses behind them with a thumping 48-0 win over Brentwood Eels at Pennine Way.

This Wednesday (June 19) sees London Junior Rugby League action at Pennine Way with a double-header between the Stags and St Albans Centurions. The U14's kick off at 6.15pm followed by the Under 16's at 7.00pm
